Eleanor Mae Sullivan

1942-2026 · Portland, Oregon

Eleanor Mae Sullivan was a teacher, gardener, and lifelong volunteer who believed small acts of care could hold a community together. Her former students remember the quiet confidence she gave them. Her family remembers her most in the garden, where she taught them to notice what was growing and to leave every place a little gentler than they found it.

Mom had a way of making every person feel like there was room at the table. I still hear her reminding us to water the tomatoes before the day gets hot.

Mrs. Sullivan was my fifth grade teacher. She wrote a note on my report card that changed how I saw myself. I kept it for 30 years.

Eleanor made the garden a place of welcome. We planted lavender by the gate in her honor.
