What to do

  1. Confirm whether transportation, permits, container, and return of ashes are included.
  2. Ask how identity is tracked from pickup through return.
  3. Decide whether the memorial will happen later, separately from the cremation.
  4. Ask about timing before making travel or service plans.

What direct cremation usually means

Direct cremation is cremation without a formal viewing or funeral service before the cremation. Families may still hold a memorial, scattering, meal, or religious service later.

It is often the least expensive cremation path because it avoids embalming, viewing facilities, and many ceremonial goods.

What to confirm in writing

Ask for a written list of what is included. Transportation, refrigeration, permits, crematory fees, temporary container, death certificates, and return of ashes can be bundled differently by provider.

If the family wants a witness cremation, religious timing, or special handling of remains, ask before signing.

Keep going

Turn this guidance into a trackable task list or provider search when you are ready. No popups, no pressure.
