What to do
- Confirm whether transportation, permits, container, and return of ashes are included.
- Ask how identity is tracked from pickup through return.
- Decide whether the memorial will happen later, separately from the cremation.
- Ask about timing before making travel or service plans.
What direct cremation usually means
Direct cremation is cremation without a formal viewing or funeral service before the cremation. Families may still hold a memorial, scattering, meal, or religious service later.
It is often the least expensive cremation path because it avoids embalming, viewing facilities, and many ceremonial goods.
What to confirm in writing
Ask for a written list of what is included. Transportation, refrigeration, permits, crematory fees, temporary container, death certificates, and return of ashes can be bundled differently by provider.
If the family wants a witness cremation, religious timing, or special handling of remains, ask before signing.
