What to do

  1. Ask what the listed price includes and what is charged separately.
  2. Confirm rules for markers, flowers, visitation hours, and future interments.
  3. Ask whether the section supports religious, veteran, family, or green burial needs.
  4. Walk or view the exact section before purchase when possible.

Think beyond the plot

A cemetery decision is partly about location and partly about rules. Families should ask about opening and closing fees, perpetual care, marker restrictions, and whether multiple family members can be placed nearby.

For cremated remains, compare columbarium niches, in-ground burial, scattering gardens, and home retention according to family preference and local rules.

Natural burial changes the questions

Green or natural burial may limit embalming, vaults, casket materials, and markers. That can be exactly what a family wants, but it should be confirmed before arrangements begin.

Ask whether the cemetery itself is certified or whether it simply permits some lower-impact practices.
